Beechwood Farm BESS is a 57MW battery energy storage project located on agricultural land at Beechwood Farm, Hodgetts Lane, Berkswell, Coventry (CV7 7DG). The project received planning permission from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in January 2025.
The BESS will connect to the Berkswell Substation, providing backup power and helping stabilise the electricity grid by supplying power during peak demand periods.
Project Overview
Project Name: Beechwood Farm BESS
Developer: Enso Energy (Enso Green Holdings P Ltd)
Capacity: ~57MW
Location: Beechwood Farm, Hodgetts Lane, Berkswell, Coventry, CV7 7DG
Status: ✅ Planning Approved (January 2025)
Grid Connection: Berkswell Substation (650m south-east of site)
Construction Expected: 2026
Developer Background
Enso Energy is a UK-based renewable energy developer focused on solar farms and battery storage projects. The company develops projects across the UK, working with landowners and local communities to deliver clean energy infrastructure.
This project represents a resubmission of a proposal initially turned down by Solihull Council's planning committee in November 2023. Following adjustments, the revised application was approved in January 2025.
Project Significance
Grid Stability: The BESS will help stabilise the electricity grid by supplying power at times of peak energy demand.
Renewable Integration: Battery storage makes renewable energy outputs a secure and reliable part of the UK energy supply.
Net Zero Support: According to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, around 30 GW of short duration storage may be needed by 2050. Projects like Beechwood Farm help meet this target.
Project Context
According to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, around 30 GW of short duration storage and flexible demand may be needed in the UK by 2050. In 2021, installed capacity was just 1.6 GW.
Battery storage plays an important role in decarbonising the energy system by storing energy and discharging it over periods of high demand when renewable sources may not be generating.
Public Consultation
A public consultation was held on 23 March 2023 at the Jordan Room, St. John Baptist Church, Church Lane, Berkswell, allowing local residents to view plans and provide feedback.
