Over the past three years a quiet revolution has been taking place across the UK countryside. From Northumberland to Oxfordshire, from Surrey to Stirling, dozens of grid-scale battery projects have been proposed, approved and are now moving toward construction. They share a common pattern: a temporary planning consent on agricultural land, a battery system of 12MW to 400MW, and full restoration of the land to farming at the end of the asset's life. We call this asset class Farm BESS.

What is a Farm BESS?

A Farm BESS is a grid-scale battery energy storage system located on agricultural land. Projects are developed under temporary planning consents, typically for 35 to 40 years, and are designed to be decommissioned with the land restored to agricultural use. They store excess renewable generation during periods of low demand and discharge it when the grid needs it most — balancing supply and demand, reducing reliance on gas peaker plants, and enabling higher penetration of wind and solar power. Landowners keep ownership of the land; developers take the planning, grid connection and construction risk.

Project profiles are built from primary sources — local authority planning portals, developer disclosures and published planning documents — rather than press summaries alone. Every published project profile must carry a verifiable planning application reference. If a planning reference cannot be independently confirmed, the project is not published. Figures are attributed to their source, and each profile is dated so readers can see when it was last checked.
